Frohmage ist der „kleine Bruder“ des Quad Frohmage, aber lass dich von der Bezeichnung nicht täuschen: Dieses Plug-in ist ein absoluter Klassiker und eines der bekanntesten Freebies (mittlerweile oft kostenlos oder extrem günstig erhältlich) in der Welt des Sounddesigns.
Während Quad Frohmage vier Filterbänke bietet, konzentriert sich Frohmage auf eine einzige, hochgradig charaktervolle Filterbank.
1. Der Sound: Einzigartig und „Dreckig“
Frohmage ist kein chirurgischer EQ. Es ist ein Werkzeug, um Klängen eine Textur zu verleihen, die von subtiler Wärme bis hin zu totaler Zerstörung reicht.
- Resonanz-Filter: Das Filter klingt sehr organisch und „analog“. Es kann extrem hohe Resonanzspitzen erzeugen, die das Signal regelrecht zum Schreien bringen.
- Mehrband-Bandpass: Eine Besonderheit ist, dass Frohmage mehrere Bandpass-Filter gleichzeitig aktivieren kann, die mathematisch miteinander verknüpft sind. Das erzeugt vokale, fast schon sprechende Klangfarben (Formanten).
2. Die Distortion-Sektion
Das Geheimnis vieler Produzenten hinter Frohmage ist die integrierte Verzerrung.
- Du kannst das Signal massiv übersteuern, wobei die Verzerrung hervorragend mit der Filterfrequenz interagiert.
- Es eignet sich perfekt, um digitale, sterile Bässe „böser“ und präsenter zu machen.
3. Delay innerhalb des Filters
Eine Besonderheit von Frohmage ist die integrierte Delay-Einheit pro Frequenzband.
- Dies erzeugt sehr kurze, metallische Echos oder Phasen-Effekte, die dem Sound eine physische Tiefe und Räumlichkeit verleihen, die man mit einem normalen Filter nicht hinbekommt.
4. Einfachheit vs. Komplexität
Im Gegensatz zu den anderen „Monstern“ von Ohmforce ist die Bedienoberfläche von Frohmage (im klassischen Käse-Design) sehr übersichtlich:
- Cutoff & Resonance: Die Hauptregler für den Filter-Vibe.
- Fatness: Ein Regler, der den Sound massiver und gesättigter macht.
- Evolution: Steuert die Modulation und wie sich das Filter über die Zeit oder das Signal verhält.
Typische Einsatzbereiche
- Basslines: Um einen simplen Sinus- oder Sägezahnbass in ein aggressives Monster zu verwandeln.
- Gitarren: Um ihnen einen lo-fi, fast schon radioartigen Charakter zu geben.
- Drums: Besonders auf Snare-Drums oder Hi-Hats, um metallische Resonanzen und „Dreck“ hinzuzufügen.
- Vocal-Effekte: Durch die Bandpass-Struktur lassen sich leicht „Quack“-Effekte oder roboterartige Stimmen erzeugen.
Fazit
Frohmage ist das perfekte Plug-in, wenn du schnell ein Ergebnis willst, das Charakter hat. Es ist unberechenbar, charmant und hat diesen typischen Ohmforce-Vibe, der nach Hardware-Schrottplatz und High-End-Studio gleichzeitig klingt.
Es ist oft der erste Schritt für viele Produzenten in das Ohmforce-Universum – simpel zu bedienen, aber mit einem Sound, den man sofort in einem Mix wiederkennt.
